It's Not Just For Popeye Anymore...

Yes...I have a tattoo. Actually, I have three.

One of the first questions I get after, "Did that hurt?" is "Why did you do it?"

For me, my latest tattoo is all about remembrance. It is about a new beginning. In 2009, I decided to get my life back in order. I began exercising, eating right and was able to stop taking all of the medications that my doctor had prescribed to keep me "healthy". All-in-all, I lost over 100 pounds and I have new zest for life.

In mythology, the Phoenix is a creature that rises from its own ashes after burning up. Being the bird of fire, the Phoenix can aptly be used to symbolize a person's inner fire and zest for life. The Phoenix symbolizes rebirth and resurrection from the ashes. For me, it reminds me of a rough patch in my life and how I successfully overcame it.

I could have gotten the tattoo on my back or some other place where nobody could have seen it. But what fun would that be? I got it on my right forearm so I can see it everyday. I want to be reminded of where I came from, where I am now, and the hard work it takes to get and and stay there.

Maybe tattoo's aren't for you. That's okay. But I'm in pretty good company...My wife and both of my daughter's have tattoo's and my oldest son is getting one when he graduates from high school.

Tattoo's...they're not just for Popeye anymore...

Be Well.
