Behold The Sunflower

Not far from where I work, a local farmer has planted 30 acres with sunflowers. The site of thousands of sunflowers in bloom is quite remarkable. The farmland is pretty famous this time of year for its flotilla of flowers and, as such, people come from miles around to take pictures. As I passed by this morning a young mom was taking pictures of her two small children standing out in the massive field of flowers. Pretty cool, huh?

Here's the cool thing about sunflowers... In their bud stage, the flower will actually follow the sun across the horizon. Bet you didn't know that, huh? So as the sun moves from East to West the flower actually turns and faces the sun. When the sun goes down at night the flower bends down toward the ground. I am not really sure how or why I know this. I think I learned it in a former life or maybe I learned it through osmosis while I slept through Mr. Reed's Biology class. Anyway....

The only reason I even mention any of this is because I have really been enjoying my morning devotions with my good friend, God. That's right...the big guy, numero uno, the big kahuna. This morning we were discussing Mark, chapter 2, when Jesus tells Matthew the tax collector to follow him and Matthew just gets up, leaves everything behind and follows Jesus. Now are you seeing where I'm going with this?

These crazy sunflowers that I see everyday are just one of the examples that I think God has set before me. As the sun moves across the sky they simply follow it. God has set this reminder and example for me, in that, everyday I should follow Him wherever He leads me. Then, in the morning and in the evening, just as the sunflower bows to the ground, I should bow before God.
Maybe tomorrow I'll return to my dysfunctional self...in the meantime, while others get their kicks out of burning books, I hope you'll pardon me while I enjoy one of God's simple miracles - the sunflower.

Be Well.
