As everyone knows, this blog is about the things, people and places that I encounter in my life's journey. It's about me trying to make sense about life. A virtual Bill meets World. Some days, I must admit, I am totally and unequivocally baffled by what I see and hear. Today was one of those days.
In the news today I read a story about how some women get post-partum depression after the birth of a child. Before I go any further I want to make it perfectly clear that I think that depression (of any kind) is one of the most horrible diseases ever and it is not my intent to make fun of anyone suffering with it. However, as I mentioned earlier, I was baffled by what my brain perceived that my eyes were reading.
The news story said that in an effort to overcome post-partum depression some health minded women have taken to eating their afterbirth. Yep, some nature momma's are eating the placenta for its nutrients that they say offset the effects of post-partum depression. Please bear with me one moment while I throw up in my mouth. Evidently, the Chinese have been doing this for centuries but it is a relatively new fad here in America. The theory being that when mom gives birth she loses a great deal of vitamins and minerals and her hormones drop to dangerous levels sometimes giving her the "baby blues".
This is like saying, "my sinuses are bothering me...I think I'll eat a booger." I have been in attendance for the birth of each of my four children. I have seen the afterbirth which resembled a tiny globe and never once did I think "Boy..I bet that would taste like a spicy meatball." And leave it to the Chinese to think that the afterbirth should be eaten. These are the same people that eat dogs, cats, and roaches.
Here's what my brain had trouble processing...who would have ever thought up the 'placenta in a pill' process? That way of thinking is way beyond anything my cerebral cortex could ever process. Don't get me wrong...if popping some placenta helps someone then I'm all for it. As for me, I'll just stick to writing down my observations in a blog.
Be Well.
