I have several morning rituals...things that I do every morning. But there is one ritual that I look forward to more than any of the others. Chances are that many of you reading this have the same morning ritual. That's right, I'm talking about singing in the shower.A recent survey confirmed that 61% of people sing while lathering up in the shower. Come on, who hasn't taken the shower head in hand and pretended it was a microphone? Very few places are as safe and secure as a shower to let your inner freak run wild. The only thing I fear, while in the shower, is one of my sons flushing the toilet in the adjacent bathroom sending all the cold water to that toilet while leaving me the scalding hot water which allows me to hit the high notes like Barry Gibb.
In the shower I can be any singer I want and I can sing any song that I want without ridicule. Outside of the shower it is an entirely different story. Why just this morning I was rocking out the song "Smells Like Teen Spirit"...I have no idea how that one popped into my head but there I was holding the shower head in one hand while singing, 'With the lights out, it's less dangerous; Here we are now, entertain us..." For a few brief moments I could sing like a rock star but once the water is off and I step out of the shower, I return to the meek and lowly non-singing voice of a man who only wishes he could sing that good all of the time.
This phenomenon is nothing new. It has been happening for thousands of years. The proof being in an episode of the Flintstones, Barney had this awesome voice in the shower but when they took him to audition for a talent show he had no ability to sing.
Maybe it's the rush of the water over our bodies that causes the tuneful transition or maybe we just like to get naked and sing, I'm not sure I fully understand; but this I do know...tomorrow morning when I shuffle from the bed to the shower and my transformation to singing sensation begins, I know there will be some of you out there standing in your shower getting on your inner Gloria Gaynor or Barry Manilow too. Have fun.
Be Well.
