As I get older, I think my view of the world is getting better, despite what my Ophthalmologist might say. I no longer think that Hollywood stars or professional sports stars are very important. Someone who makes a lot of money memorizing lines and reciting them in front of others is not my idea of a shining star. Someone who can dribble a basketball on a Sunday afternoon in front of millions on television is not a person that needs to be looked up to.
They can be nice, interesting people, but they are not heroes to be idolized. A real star, is a member of the Navy Seals who went into Pakistan and terminated the life of Osama bin Laden. The real stars who deserve media attention are not the ones who have lavish weddings on TV but the men and women who serve our country at home and abroad.
We put the rich and famous on the covers of our magazines. But yet, the men and women of our military who barely scrape by on military pay but stand on guard in Afghanistan and Iraq and throughout the world seem to live and die in anonymity. I am no longer comfortable with that ideology.
There are other stars or heroes throughout our great country who go unnoticed. The policemen and women who go off on patrol each day and have no idea if they will return alive. The mothers who care for children with medical conditions that require constant care. The kind men and women who work in hospices and in cancer wards. I could go on and on but I think you get the picture...
Think of each and every fireman who was running up the stairs at the World Trade Center as the towers began to collapse. Now you have my idea of a real hero.
Be Well.
