So, I've been wondering...what is wrong with spiking a football? Earlier this week, President Obama said, in reference to releasing photo's of the dead bin Laden, "We don't want to trot out this stuff as trophies...we don't need to spike the football."
When I first heard his comments I thought that it was a strange arrogation in decision making. Who is "we?" It was another odd twist to the president who promised transparency. Obviously, the "we" he was referring to is the American people. Didn't the American people earn the picture? Isn't it ours?
A dead devil is not supposed to look attractive or inspiring. Gruesome? All the better for what old Binny started ten years ago. The American people saw those human beings jumping from the towers to escape the flames. Was that too gruesome to see? Seeing bin Laden dead in violent fashion would be a most welcome close to the mission. So, for now, we are stuck with the pictures of the devil bin Laden while he was alive with his faux spiritual blank face.
As for spiking the football, I've never thought it equated to bad sportsmanship. It is a celebration of a well executed plan, that had years and years of hard work and dedication behind it. To insinuate that the American people are end-zone gloaters showing bad sportsmanship is wrong. All wrong. At a moment when the president is preaching the need for unity, I think it is an awful disunifying tone to strike by not releasing the pictures.
So for now, I'm left with taking a picture of Binny bad boy and drawing bruises and blood and guts and spiders on his face like I used to do to my mother's Sears Catalog when I was growing up. Come on Wikileaks....get those pictures, I think the families of those lost on 9/11 and the soldiers who have been killed hunting for this bastard deserve a chance to celebrate in the end-zone.
Be Well.
