Staying In Love

Many years ago someone gave me this piece of advice about relationships..."Remember, we all stumble, every one of us.  That's why it's a comfort to go hand in hand."  In my case it could be better said..."Remember, Bill is gonna fall on his face, you can bet your ass on it.  We can only hope that Donna doesn't get hurt too bad since they are always holding hands."

When we were dating we would always go for long walks.  It was not uncommon to see us walking around the streets of Cumberland holding hands.  We held hands on walks, at the movies, in church, wherever we went.  There was something about being as close to each other as we possibly could.  As teenagers, life was pretty carefree but then along came adulthood and marriage and jobs and mortgages and kids and well....life.  All of the events of life were competing for our attention and with those events came the realization that it was difficult to maintain the closeness as a couple that we enjoyed as teenagers.

When you're holding on to someone it's easy to keep them close.  There were times over the years that we drifted further away from each other than we should have.  Oh sure, there were lots of reasons...none of them good.  When we did drift apart, we always knew how to find our way back to the hands the held us when we first fell in love.

When I think about our relationship of some 38 years now, I am reminded of these lyrics from one of my favorite songs....
We can always look back at what we did
Always remembering you and me, baby
But right now it's you and me forever girl
You know we could do better than anything we ever did
You know that you and me we could do anything

And the secret is to remember..."wherever you go, it's always a comfort to go hand in hand."

Be Well.
