"I think the Mayans just ran out of paper to make more calendars." ~ Bill Kirby
Well friends, the countdown to the apocalypse is on. We are rapidly moving toward December 21, 2012, the date that the ancient Mayan calendar allegedly marked as the end of an era that would reset the date to zero and signal the end of humanity. Now, of course, the Mayans knew this because the ancient alien space people taught them how to calculate the end of the world and write it down on a calendar for us. We all know that after writing 12-21-2012 on the stone tablet, they all climbed aboard the alien space craft and headed off to the dwarf planet Eris; taking with them the secrets to how the pyramids in Egypt were actually built.
I know this sounds silly, and yet, today I found myself wondering if the Mayan Doomsday Prediction could actually be for real. And then I put that stupid thought right out of my head. Or so I thought. I mean, once a thought makes its way into the Kirby Cortex it tends to stay there for a while. But then I starting thinking, "why does the date 12-21-12 have to signal doom and gloom?" Maybe the ancient astronauts were trying to tell the Mayans that a new and glorious age of peace and prosperity would be ushered in after that prognosticated date. What if?
So then I got to thinking that my end of the world could happen tomorrow or the next day or next month or whenever. While this might be a morbid thought, the reality is that none of us know when our last day on planet earth will come. So then the question becomes, "what would I do if this were my last day on earth?"
So, today I took an extra moment before I left for work and kissed my wife and made sure that she knew that she was the most important thing in my life and that I loved her beyond measure. I prayed for each of my children and asked God to guide and protect them throughout the day. I took an extra moment and appreciated the beautiful sunrise that God had prepared for me. At work I made sure to look for opportunities to praise my employees and then act upon it. I gave my dog, Lucy, and extra special treat when I fixed her dinner. And now, I'm sharing with my readers how every day is a gift and that we should make the most of time God has given us.
So I guess I'm happy that the Mayans gave me a date to think about. Little did they know that 1,300 years after making their prediction that Bill Kirby would take their Doomsday Prediction and turn it into positive. I can't wait to enjoy tomorrow.
Be Well.
Bill
