When Was The Last Time Someone Cheered For You?

"Old men need applause too."  ~  Don Everly

When was the last time somebody cheered for you?  Honestly, the last time someone cheered for me it cost me $20,000.  And the time before that it cost me $20,000.  Both times were at each of my daughters wedding receptions.  I think the only reason the guests cheered and applauded is because I had funded the open bar for the evening.  Thanks to me, they all had a little Captain in them.

Growing up, people used to cheer for me all the time when I played sports.  Now that I'm older, no one cheers for me.  Why is that I wonder?  Am I not cheer worthy anymore?  Maybe it's because I don't wear a uniform anymore.  Or maybe it's because I don't shoot three pointers anymore or hit home runs.  When I watch sports on television, people cheer the athletes who shoot three's and hit homers.  But since I hung up my high top Converses I no longer receive cheers.  Now if I wore my Chuck Taylor's, my offspring would not want to be seen with me; let alone cheer.

So today I was thinking that it would be cool if people cheered for me.  Here is Bill Kirby, a wonderful father and great husband!  (Applause and Cheers)  Ladies and Gentlemen, here is my good friend and all around great guy, Bill Kirby!  (Applause and Cheers)  Bill Kirby, former classmate and facebook friend!  (Applause and Cheers)

But there are no cheers.  I think that it would be great if we cheered for people other than performers and athletes.  So today, I cheered for some of my co-workers.  I gave gifts to some of the people who work with me.  I told them that I appreciated them and then I gave them a standing ovation. The reactions were amazing.  No one expected it but all were so excited that I noticed and appreciated them.

Actually, I am not looking for anyone to cheer for me.  But it would be nice.  After seeing the reactions of my co-workers today I think I'll cheer for people more often.

Be Well.
