"You can't depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus." ~ Mark Twain
Life can be funny sometimes and today I had one of those funny life moments. My life moment today involved a little person, you know, someone who is vertically challenged, or can I just say, a midget. I've never been politically correct, however, I am trying to be a little more sensitive these days. Ah, who am I kidding?
I was entering a store to buy something that I really didn't need when the automatic door opened and out popped a midget. I say, "out popped" but he was really just trying to walk through the automatic door but I didn't see him. So, as I went to enter the store, my average height of a person collided with his lesser than large self. I stopped only briefly and for just a nano-second was at a loss for words. But in that nano-second, all I could think of was something my Pappy once told me. He said, "If you hit a midget in the groin, the noise he makes can only be heard by children and dogs."
After our brief mini Mexican stand-off, I said something like, "Oops! Sorry, Buck-a-roo" or something to that nature. He uttered no reply, or, if he did, I didn't hear him way up where my ears were. Nonetheless, I went about my shopping adventure but I couldn't get that little fella out of my mind.
So, this evening, I was reading the Bible. More specifically, I opened the Bible to Luke, Chapter 19. It was a random opening, I did not plan on going there, but God must have had a different idea. The Bible narrative was about a man named Zacchaeus and in the narrative it mentions that he was short, so short, that he had to climb a tree to see Jesus as Jesus was walking by because he couldn't see Him over the crowd. The story ends with Jesus telling him to get out of the tree because Jesus wanted to go and spend the evening with him at his house. That evening Zacchaeus repents and follows Jesus.
Now there is a lot more to the narrative but I think that will suffice as the Reader's Digest version. So let's recap... I see a small person and I wonder what noise they make when they are hit in the groin. Jesus sees a small person and saves his soul. Oh boy. I guess my funny life moment wasn't so funny after all. Okay, it still is a little.
I really am trying to be more like Jesus every day. I just don't know what it is about little people that make me lose my focus. I guess Mel Gibson was right when he said, "Midgets are the cause of all wars." I think I need a time out.
Be Well.
