Running Your Own Race

"I honestly think it is better to be a failure at something you love than to be a success at something you hate."  ~  George Burns

The older I've gotten the more content I've become with who I am and what I have in this life.  Already I can tell that some of you are confused so let me clarify.  I still set goals for my life and each day I try to become a better version of the person that I believe God wants me to be.  The contentment that I'm talking about has more to do with me being Bill Kirby.

I've learned that true happiness comes from accepting you for who you are.  God didn't create you to be someone else.  Oh sure, I sometimes wish I was a little taller and I wish that my body mass index didn't calculate to infinity but you know what?  God doesn't make junk.  Everyone of us is a masterpiece.  His Masterpiece.  Think about that for a minute.  Go ahead.  I'll wait...

I remember, a number of years ago, I toured this art museum in London, England, and there was this painting on the wall (I don't remember what it was) but it looked all crazy like a 5 year-old had painted it.  I remember standing there with a few others looking at it and wondering if I was on a hidden camera TV show because this had to be a joke.  So I made some sarcastic comment to this woman next to me about the painting.  And what she told me changed my view on art and life forever.  She told me that the value of the painting is not in what you see; the value comes from it's creator.  Think about that for a minute.  Go ahead.  I'll wait...

We all might not be beautiful in everyone else's eyes but in God's eye's we are a masterpiece.  There should be a little tag on each of our backs that says, "Handmade by God".  You are God's Masterpiece.  A one-of-a-kind.  Celebrate your uniqueness.  Go ahead.  I'll wait...

Too often we compare ourselves to other people and while we're doing that we miss out on enjoying all that God made us to be.  Don't get down on yourself because you don't like your hair or you're too short (notice how I correctly used your and you're?) or you have a big honking nose.  Plastic surgery, Grecian Formula and platform shoes can only change you so much.  Why would you want to fool with perfection anyway?  You are God's personal one-of-a-kind creation.  Once I wrapped my Bill Kirby brain around that concept, I learned to love myself which enabled me to begin loving, and seeing, others the way that God intended me to see them.  It was life changing.  Trust me.  Come on trust me.  Go ahead.  I'll wait...

Be Well.
