Life At 55

"Always find time for the things that make you feel happy and all giggly wiggly on the inside."  -  Bill Kirby

Last week I did something that I've never done before.  My wife and I took an unplanned vacation.  A week or so ago, my cousin and his lovely wife invited us to come to Florida and spend a few days with them on their vacation.  So we did.  We cleared our calendar of all planned activities, bought some airline tickets and away we went.

To say that we had a blast on our last minute getaway would be an understatement.  On the way home, I started thinking a little deeper about where I am in life and why this fling to Florida meant so much to me.  I think that it really has more to do with where I am in life more so than anything else.

These days, I really try to surround myself with people who laugh and make me laugh.  Over the last several years, I've tried to eradicate all of the negative influences and people in my life.  At age 55, I need to really focus more on the positive.

Also, I am finally realizing that when it comes to body image, I really need to have a sense of humor.  For me, over the last decade or so, everything good about my body headed south to the Bermuda Triangle never to return again.  So why fight it?  I do what I can to stay healthy but let's face it, the Bill Kirby body has seen better days.  I'll just continue to make fun of myself and party on.

At age 55, I figure, by my hillbilly math, that I probably only have about 1,000 weekends left on planet earth.  So why not make the most of them?  I have to admit though, that after this last week in Florida, most of this weekend was spent trying to catch up on some much needed sleep.  Oh well, I've also discovered that the older you get the more time your body needs to recover.

So what am I saying?  At age 55, I have a better appreciation for life and the people that I celebrate it with these days.  The things and some of the people that I used to think were so important in my life aren't so important anymore.

If I'm checking all of the boxes, last week I spent some time with some people who know how to laugh and boy did they make me laugh.  Thank you cousin Paul and Patty.  I also didn't let the fact that I am an out of shape 50 something year-old get in the way of me having the time of my life.  It's amazing how a good pair of Oakley's can make you appear more handsome than you really are...  And finally, I made the most out of the time I spent with the people that I love.  I'd say that I had a pretty good week, wouldn't you?

Be well.
