The officials at Heritage Christian School in Findlay had warned the 17 year old that he would be suspended and prohibited from attending graduation if he went to the public school dance over the weekend with his girlfriend.
He said he didn't think going to the dance was wrong even though his fundamentalist Baptist school forbids dancing, rock music and hand-holding.
Are you kidding me?
I have an idea...let's lock up all the teenagers like Rosemary Kennedy and never trust them to make the right moral decisions. Here's the problem, you can't legislate morality by making up silly rules like no dancing or hand-holding. Even though every detail of Jesus' life isn't written in the Bible, I do believe that when Jesus had down time with His disciples that they had a good time. Now, unlike Cal Naughton, Jr., I don't picture Jesus in a Tuxedo T-Shirt, but I do picture Him as someone who would approve of a little dancing, a little music and some hand-holding.
Hey listen, as a parent, I know that at some point you have to trust your kids and let them apply the faith that they've been taught.
My daughter got married last weekend. At the reception we danced to all kinds of music and, I'm pretty sure, there was some hand-holding going on. I guess we're lucky that God didn't rain down fire and brimstone on our celebration!
